If you’re a small business owner, you know that increasing your website’s visibility online can make or break your business goals. While it is important to drive traffic to your website, it is crucial to focus on the right kind of traffic. So how do you attract more of the right kinds of leads and potential customers? Search engine optimization (SEO), of course!

Brush up on SEO basics, increase organic website traffic, and generate revenue with these tips from our marketing pros at Charisma!

Why SEO?

In the simplest terms possible, SEO optimizes your online visibility. This means that the more people see and click on your website, the more your online traffic will increase and the better your chances are to get your product or service in front of more potential customers.

When searching online, 75% of users don’t look past the first page of search results.

Since there are only 10 spots on a Google search page, it is important to rank the highest you can. If prospective clients type in a topic that is relevant to your business, you want to be on that first search results page alongside your competitors, right?   SEO gives you the power to be the answer to your prospect’s questions and queries. In addition to visibility and traffic, SEO allows you to be an authoritative voice in your field. This authority leads to trust, which ultimately leads to brand loyalty. Yes!

Focus on User Experience (UX)

In June of 2021, Google launched a new official ranking update called Core Web Vitals. Usually, Google’s core updates focus on content. This time, however, it’s all about the user experience (UX).  Core Web Vitals will measure the UX for your website by looking at three main aspects of your website:

  • Loading speed
  • Stability
  • Interactivity and responsiveness

Ultimately, you want every visitor to your website to have a seamless experience where they can quickly find the information they need, and hopefully, buy your product or service!

Use Internal Links

We previously discussed the importance of internal links. And by the way, we just used one!  Internal links connect users to different pages within your website using relevant keywords. Linking in this way can be a huge opportunity for SEO because people will be reaching parts of your website such as your blog, services pages, and contact pages that might otherwise be orphaned and rarely clicked on.

Refresh Content

It is essential to refresh and update content periodically to rank better in search. This is because search engines like Google prioritize the most relevant content for their users.   In the vein, don’t forget to update images while you’re at it.

Say you're updating a blog post from 2017 which has outdated images. With outdated images, it will immediately feel like old content, even if the information you have there is still relevant. So take a look at your old blog posts and make sure that any images you have don’t detract from the high-quality evergreen content you are providing.

Optimize for Voice Search

The advent of smart virtual assistants like Alexa, Siri, Cortana, and Google has brought forth a new era in search—voice-enabled searching.

In the United States, around 40% of Internet users use voice commands to search.

To best optimize for voice search, it is important to incorporate long-tail and location-based keywords alongside a conversational tone on your website. (P.S. Don’t forget to claim your business on Google My Business!)

Perform a Site Audit

Every now and then, it is important to go over every inch of your website and analyze where it could be improved. For example, you could work on getting rid of broken links or images, fix any redirects, and ensure that every page is optimized.   This is also a great opportunity to update any titles and meta descriptions to ensure that you are accurately explaining the information that each page of your content provides.

A website audit should also include identifying non-performing content. To fix these pieces of content you can:

  • Refresh on-page SEO which includes updating meta tags, descriptions, headers, and alt tags to help rank higher.
  • Redirect organic traffic from lower-performing pages to higher-performing ones.
  • Use canonical redirects on similar pages so search engines know which pages to prioritize.

While you’re at it > Does Your Website Need a Refresh?
