Are you maximizing the full potential with internal links on your website? More than likely, the answer is “no.” It’s okay. No judgment here, but I will help you boost your internal linking strategy (and website performance!) with 5 can’t-miss SEO tactics!

The Power of Internal Links

One thing we’ve noticed is that a lot of people do not leverage their full power for SEO gain. This is obviously an unintentional move. The good news? It’s easily fixed, especially with the use of internal links.

For example, you add a link from an existing page on your website to a new page. Within weeks, you will see interesting metrics, not necessarily on the page that you linked to, but the one you linked from. By making this small move, other SEO gains will likely result, some of which include:

  • Bounce rates tend to go down.
  • The number of pages per session will increase.
  • Session duration will improve.
  • Overall traffic increases.

And the best benefit of all? These all lead to new quality leads and prospects who convert! Start leveraging your website’s full power. Our local SEO consultants can help you stay connected with your customers and create true brand advocates!

SEO Tactics Using Internal Links

Strive for engagement.

Pursuing engagement should be your number one goal when utilizing internal links. Why? Because it allows visitors to see other relevant pages on your site, thus improving your engagement metrics.  When you improve engagement, you know your internal links are working! It doesn’t hurt that Google loves having those extra clicks to count as well.

With their updated algorithm BERT – useful content is key! Tip: Where you place your internal links is important! Place the links throughout an article or webpage to continue the customer journey.

Link to topically relevant pages.

No one likes a party of one...When publishing a new page, look for other pages on your site that are topically related, then interlink appropriately. This will give a rankings boost to all the pages!

Also, Google uses Topical PageRank to rate links that are more topically relevant and pass more value (as opposed to links that are less topically relevant that pass less value). Not sure if the links are showing as topically relevant? Just take a quick look at your engagement metrics (ex. Pageviews, time on page, and % of exit) in your Google Analytics account.

Add context to your links.

Remember when adding internal links to add relevant context to the link! You may also want to draw attention to an important link with an image. Bonus points if it’s related to both pieces of content and optimized for Google!

Don’t just sit there...Make sure your prospects have a great experience before they even contact you! Links make it happen. Remember this key step in your customer journey!

Just act natural...

Make everything you can unique. Don’t just make it unique, make it natural. Use natural words and avoid an exact match anchor text. This keeps you from over-optimizing, which is a big no-no in the world of Google.

Focus on providing value.

Trimming your low-value links (links that are not engaging or relevant) is a type of old PageRank sculpting, meaning every page has a certain amount of PageRank. When you include a lot of links on your page, the value that Google passes through each link is essentially diminished.

Tip: Identify “low-value links” by measuring their number of clicks. If people are not clicking, they are not engaging or relevant, and there is no point to give them any kind of real estate on your page.
