What is A Call-To-Action?

A call-to-action, CTA for short, is an actionable tool that calls people to action, ie. signing up for your newsletter, purchasing an item, or scheduling a consultation with your business. Usually, CTAs are in the form of a button or a link. Bottom line: CTAs are used to convert prospects into customers. There are effective and ineffective ways to design and word CTAs.

Tips for Compelling CTAs

  • Make it compelling. You must have a clear and concise directive for your prospects to follow. Our top tip: Use a strong commanding verb for your CTA.
  • Keep it in the first person.
  • Convey a sense of urgency. Tap into your customer’s FOMO and make sure to include deadlines with your CTA. (ex. Shop Now! Sale ends tomorrow! Or Grab it before it’s gone!)
  • Clearly state the benefit that your customer will receive. Will they receive 25% off? Will they learn a secret of the trade? Tell them!
  • Engage your customers with a little humor.
  • Emphasize freebies.
  • Use bold colors for your CTA buttons.
  • Keep it simple and to the point.

Action-worthy Call-to-Actions

Now, let’s take a look at some of our favorite action worthy CTAs!

Start Your Journey

We believe some of the best call-to-actions mention a direct benefit that the user will get when they click the CTA button. These are used to tell the user what they will get in exchange for providing their email address or for buying your product or service.   Examples:

  • Start your journey to living debt-free!
  • Start your journey to weight loss.
  • Start speaking a new language today!

Start using CTAs like this right away in your marketing. This kind of CTA works because it allows the customer to imagine their own successful future. It suggests that their goal is just in reach and all they have to do is click the button to begin.  If you can motivate and excite your prospects to click, that’s great marketing!

You’ve probably seen this on many websites. With this type of CTA, you might be invited to sign up for a free trial, a course, an event, or even some sort of product. With this one, it all depends on the context of the ad or website.

Learn More

Maybe you need to give your prospect a little more information before they purchase. It can be about you, your brand, or a specific service. If they need more info, this is how they can get it!

Start The Quiz

There’s just something about quizzes. It’s like they have an almost magnetic pull. They are fun to take and can be used as a unique way to pull prospects and customers further into your sales funnel. The best part? You can end your quiz with a final CTA!   Keep in mind, the quiz should relate to your business.

For instance, if you sell hair care products, you might ask your customer what kind of hair they have, what issues they might be having with their hair, and what their goal is for their hair. At the end of the quiz, you can use a CTA that recommends a specific hair care product!  Quizzes are fun, and can be an interesting way to get your prospective customer from Point A to Point B – which is the sale!

These kinds of CTAs don’t commit your customer to purchase, but rather, invites them to receive newsletters or updates from your business. These are common for business blogs when you want to develop a relationship with your audience.

Add to Cart

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to your CTAs. Simple can be successful! Big companies like Amazon use this CTA on their website! When you use a CTA like this one, your customer doesn’t have to think, they know exactly what “add to cart,” means.

Reserve Your Spot Now!

Exclusivity is a powerful motivator. By telling your prospects that they need to reserve a spot, they will covet it even more! Think, access to an exclusive email list or club, tickets to a private concert or event, etc.

If you’re offering a free webinar or class, use this CTA. It will subtly communicate to your audience that there are only a few spots available, so they better sign up quick (tapping into that FOMO again)!
